Oh, my. Now this HAD to be awkward. You know that Mel Gibson has kind of taken troubled pop star Britney Spears under his wing, right? Well, lately that included setting her up with one of his twin sons who went to rehabilitation center too and got himself together. The Enquirer has more:

“Mel felt Ed would be a great influence on Brit, and if the bond turned to romance, all the better,” said the insider.
So Gibson arranged a meeting between the pair at Britney’s home in the Hollywood Hills last March, said the source.
“He sincerely believed that his son could help Britney stay on the straight and narrow and that they might hit it off as a couple as well,” the insider explained.
But Britney, 26, gave the cold shoulder to Mel and Edward…
“She hid from them most of the night,” revealed the insider. “Mel and his son spent most of the evening talking to her bodyguards.”

Well, honestly, I can see this working. Mel seems to have his head on relatively straight, he does have some infamous messups, but he seems to genuinely care about his family and really seems to care about Britney, too. Personally, though, I would be VERY wary of inviting this completely unbalanced person (Britney) into my family - she’s just too unstable.

Britney Spears spent her Tuesday afternoon at the Lisa Kline boutique in Beverly Hills and from there continued to the Grand Havana Room in Beverly Hills where she met Mel Gibson for a dinner/chat/date. Britney stayed at the club till around 9:30, while Gibson hung around until about 11.

The real story, though, happened upon Britney’s arrival at the cigar club where photogs were just pushing it too much. At first they got into it with her bodyguards and later she kind of freaked out yelling “I’m Scared” as photogs swarmed around her.

According to a photog: “She looked pretty in her new Capri jeans a blue blouse, white shoes and a brown bag, she looked like a doll with bright red lipstick,” said the photog, who described her as “very quiet” and “with a serious look on her face as she walked in to the Havana Club.”

Today on The View, the ladies started talking about the current bond between Britney Spears and Mel Gibson, and how he’s been counseling her and offering her support. Most recently, Britney and Mel got together at an exclusive Beverly Hills cigar club. They stayed there for a few hours, chatting, and then left separately.

One of the co-hosts, Joy Behar, doesn’t agree with this mentorship, claiming that he’s not a good example for her to be aspiring to and that he’s an anti-semite.

What do you think? Is he being a good friend and helping her get her life back in order or is he really the wrong person to be doing that, considering his track record with drunk driving and racial slurs?

Costa Rica did a world of good for Britney Spears, who is back in Los Angeles. She looks more relaxed than I’ve seen her in
a long time. After doing some legal work with Kevin Federline’s attorney to hammer out custody issues (no word on how that
went yet), Britney got dressed up in a black strapless dress (love the blue hem and the necklace!) and went out for dinner.

She ate at Il Sole with George Maloof - he owns the Sacramento Kings, Sacramento Monarchs and the Palms Hotel & Casino in Vegas. Uh, wow!

There was speculation that there was some romance blooming in Costa Rica at Mel Gibson’s ranch when Britney was seen with a young man on the beach, but maybe she’s not tying herself down to any one person just yet - was this dinner out a date, business, or just friendship? Who knows but good for her for enjoying life again!
