Notoriously fickle and youth obsessed, the profession normally casts out most of its models almost as soon as they are out of their teens.
Or so the common theories go. To the surprise of many, though, it is no waif-life Eastern European youth grabbing the attention of fashion watchers in the September edition of British Vogue. Rather it is Linda Evangelista, the new, 43-year-old face of Prada.
In a move that is seen as the ultimate eye-catching play to a public who are less keen to spend as the credit crunch worsens, the supermodels - the elite group of Amazonian women who took the world by storm in the early 1990s - are now back in vogue.
Like Claudia Schiffer, Christy Turlington, Eva Herzigova, Helena Christensen, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell, Evangelista became famous for taking fashion modelling and salary demands to a new level. She is often quoted as saying that she “didn’t get out of bed for less than $10,000″.
As the face of the autumn/winter Prada collection, Evangelista is back on the front line, Campbell is starring in the new Yves Saint Laurent campaign, Turlington is the most recent face of Escada and Schiffer is currently smiling for Salvatore Ferragamo.
According to Carol White, managing editor of Premiership Model Management, the renaissance of “the supermodels” can be credited in part to the desire to appeal to older women with more disposable income, and the need to have the models most instantly recognisable to a public with less cash to splash.
“In times of financial instability, brands go for top quality; they want to sell dreams. There is much more punch with a girl like Linda, than a beautiful face from Ukraine,” Ms White said.
“Over the last four or five years we’ve seen an influx of beautiful but bland girls from Eastern Europe. Today, fashion brands are looking to spice things up with strong personalities and iconic women.”
The trend is good news for the 40-somethings who have all, at some time or other, slipped off the fashion radar.
Known as “the trinity” in the early 1990s, Evangelista, Campbell and Turlington pushed for better model wages. They paved the way for the likes of Giselle Bundchen, who last year topped Forbes.com’s list of the top earning models in the world, earning $US33 million ($35 million).
Two decades on, the likes of Evangelista can expect at least $637,000 for a campaign - 300 times more than an unknown face would receive.

Just three weeks after being sentenced to 200 hours of community service for assaulting two police officers, supermodel Naomi Campbell wants the world to know she’s “not a bad person.” Campbell gave an emotional interview to the Daily Mirror to refute the media’s portrayal of the 38-year-old as a diva with a bad attitude. “I’m not a bad person. When people say all these negative things about me, I ignore them,” she said. “Let them be negative - but do that away from me. It hurts but I know there is much more good in the world. “I’m blessed to be able to do charitable work and good things but no one focuses on that because I don’t throw it in people’s faces.” Most people, however, might consider Campbell’s long history of outbursts and reports of violence to be more convincing than a teary-eyed interview. Here’s a recap of her timeline of trouble: * June 2000: Campbell’s personal assistant Vanessa Frisbee accused the model of attacking her. * August 2004: One of Campbell’s maids accuses the model of kicking, scratching and slapping her. * March 2005: The leggy model reportedly beat her assistant with her Blackberry. (Campbell denied it.) * January 2006: Campbell was sentenced to five days of community service for misdemeanor assault after she threw her cell phone at her housekeeper for reportedly taking her jeans. The housekeeper is said to have needed four stitches to patch up the wounds. * July 2006: Several former employees filed lawsuits against the catwalker for physical and mental abuse. Supermodel Naomi Campbell was today sentenced to 200 hours of community service after admitting kicking and spitting at Heathrow Airport police officers as she went “berserk” in a row over lost luggage.
The raging star had moments earlier launched into a foul-mouthed tirade against the plane’s Captain Miles Sutherland after being told that one of her bags containing an Yves Saint Laurent outift for a US TV show had gone missing at Terminal 5.
Ordering him to personally find her bag she screamed: “You are not leaving until you find my f****** bags”, before accusing him of being “racist”.
Today the model was sentenced to 200 hours community service by magistrates sitting at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court.

She had pleaded guilty to two counts of assaulting a police officer and one count of disorderly conduct likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress and using threatening, abusive words or behaviour to cabin crew.
Campbell was also ordered to pay ?200 to each police officer she attacked and ?150 compensation to Captain Sutherland.
She was also fined a total of ?1,300 - ?650 for disorderly conduct and another ?650 for abusing cabin staff as well as a ?15 surcharge.
In sentencing Campbell, chairman of the magistrates’ bench Peter Yiacoumi told her that they were giving her full credit for her pleas of guilty at the earliest opportunity and were taking into account her previous good character.
He said: “These offences are aggravated because they were committed within a lengthy incident in a confined space on an aircraft. Whilst we accept that the loss of your suitcase would have been stressful your subsequent behaviour cannot be justified.”
The court was earlier told that as police arrived to remove Campbell, who was refusing to leave the British Airways Los Angeles bound flight on April 3, she seemed to “completely lose control” accusing them of targeting her because she was “black and famous”.
Melanie Parrish, prosecuting, said: “She went berserk, thrashing her arms around uncontrollably and striking Pc John Eastick on the arm with her phone.”
Continuing to struggle violently Campbell threw her right leg back and thrust it forward, striking another male officer, Pc Charles Campling, on the thigh.
Miss Parrish added: “At the time she was wearing formidable platform boots with stiletto-style heels.”
As all the officers moved forward to try to remove her she was kicking out indiscriminately and caught Pc Eastick on the right shin and left thigh before slumping down into her seat.
The court heard she continued to shout and swear and then pulled her head back and threw it forward, spitting at Pc Eastick and catching him on the arm.
The officer told her he was arresting her for assault and she claimed she hadn’t spat at him and it had only occurred because she was wearing a brace.
Campbell then shouted at the officers: “It is because I am a black woman, you are all racists. I am going to sue you. I am going to f*** you,” and continued to kick out as they tried to remove her.
The court was told that the 38-year-old, who was a first class passenger on the Los Angeles bound flight, was at first very friendly and professional.
Miss Parrish told the court that things turned sour when Captain Sutherland told passengers that due to the new terminal’s teething problems not all the baggage had been loaded.
When Cpt Sutherland approached Campbell to apologise and see if he could help she got on her mobile phone and began to shout and swear at him.
As he walked away Campbell shouted after him: “You are a racist, you wouldn’t be doing this if I was white.”
On being asked to leave the aircraft Campbell refused and yelled: “F*** you, f*** you, Captain”, resulting in the police being called.
The court later adjourned to consider Campbell’s sentence.

Fresh off of a highly-publicized courtroom sentencing, Naomi Campbell headed off to Milan, Italy for the Dolce & Gabbana fashion show as part of Milan Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2009 on Saturday (June 21).

The lone lady to hit the runway, Campbell appeared in a black bra and boxer shorts, accompanied with a white Japanese print bath robe.

Yes that’s Naomi Campbell hiding under all of that hair. Here she is on her way into the Magistrate’s court earlier today.

The supermodel pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting two police officers at London’s Heathrow Airport on April 3rd.

She’s expected to be sentenced sometime later on this afternoon. Sources say that she can get a sentence of six months in jail as well as a $10,000 fine for each charge, if convicted.

Update: She has been sentenced to 200 hours of community service and a $4,500 fine. She’s escaped jail this time, but when her temper flares up next time, she might not be so lucky.

Naomi Campbell was at her diva best last night, showing that she can’t even leave a restaurant without causing a scene. She was enjoying a night at Cipriani in Mayfair with a group of friends when the drama unfolded. The supermodel, whose receding hairline was clearly visible as she brushed her hair back, was happy to pose for pictures as she left after dinner. But, in a flash, she started shouting and ran back inside where she waited for a couple of minutes. Naomi Campbell is familiar with what to do when her employees sue her, for any reason: Just throw money at it!!

She has reportedly settled a case with her former housekeeper, after the woman accused Naomi of racial and sexual discrimination.

Ivana Lovas took Naomi to an employment tribunal amid accusations that the star made her life a “living hell” in the four whole months that she was working for her. Naomi works fast at making people miserable.

Ivana also said that Naomi abused when she threatened to quit and criticized her language skills.

A preliminary court hearing also heard that there were “two occassions of agressive, abusive and criminal behavior” on the part of Campbell. But now the case has been settled out of court, with Campbell reportedly paying out thousands of dollars in compensation to her former employee.

A representative for Campbell has confirmed the case will be going no further, telling British newspaper the Sunday Mirror, “I can confirm the matter has been resolved.”

Just throw money at it, Naomi, it seems to be the charm, every time!
